Telegram Desktop offers a Windows build and a portable version. Both are ways to use the desktop client; neither should be confused with Telegram Web, which runs in a browser. This comparison is for Windows users deciding how to keep application files, updates, and their signed-in session under control before choosing a download.
What the official desktop page actually offers
The Telegram Desktop page lists a Windows x64 download and a portable version, with additional platform options. The existence of a portable build does not mean every file labeled “portable Telegram” elsewhere has the same origin. This site’s download address is currently blank; its file button will remain disabled until the owner configures and checks the actual destination. Do not substitute an arbitrary mirror because this page mentions a version.
First confirm that the computer runs Windows and which architecture it uses. Then check the file’s source, version, publisher/signing details where provided, size, and checksum against the actual file delivered. A hash of an unknown file only confirms that two copies match; it does not identify who created it.
Installer: a conventional setup flow
Use the regular installer when you have permission to install software and want the normal application setup. During installation, read the folder and shortcut choices and pay attention to Windows publisher prompts. If a downloaded file asks you to disable security controls, install unrelated software, or enter a Telegram login code into the installer, stop. Telegram sign-in belongs in the running client, not in an unrelated download page or setup wrapper.
After installation, open the desktop app and check one familiar cloud chat. If it opens normally, do not reinstall simply because a single group is muted or one file is stored in an unfamiliar location. Those are notification or storage tasks, handled separately in the Desktop files guide and community guide.
Portable: plan where the app and data will live
A portable build is useful when you want to choose and manage its folder yourself. That flexibility adds responsibility: you need to know where the application and its local data are kept, who can access that location, how updates will be applied, and what should happen when the computer is retired or shared. Do not assume “portable” means that every trace disappears after closing the app or that a signed-in account is protected without a passcode.
If you copy the folder to another computer, review account-session and data implications before opening it there. Telegram’s FAQ distinguishes ordinary cloud chats, which can sync across signed-in devices, from Secret Chats, which are device-specific. Moving program files is not a method for transferring device-specific Secret Chats.
Which choice fits your computer?
After sign-in: protect the session
Telegram can be used on multiple devices. On a shared Windows computer, review active sessions and use available app/device lock controls. When you no longer trust the computer, end that session rather than assuming deleting a shortcut logs out the account. If a login code arrives unexpectedly, do not give it to a person or bot claiming to manage your download.
