Telegram on macOS is a separate platform choice, not a Windows executable with a different label. Telegram lists Mac options from its applications directory. This page helps Mac users choose the intended client, check the downloaded application, and set up a reliable first session. A download button configured by this site must still be checked against the file it actually delivers; this guide does not invent a version or checksum.
Choose a Mac route, not a Windows installer
Confirm your Mac’s operating-system version and architecture before selecting an application. Telegram’s desktop page may present more than one Mac route, including a direct desktop client and a store listing. Check the current descriptions and requirements at the destination itself. An EXE belongs to Windows, while an Android APK belongs to Android; neither should be renamed or repackaged to look like a Mac download.
The desktop systems comparison outlines other platform choices, and the desktop first-session page focuses on account checks after a client is installed. This page stays with Mac-specific decisions rather than repeating a generic download checklist.
Inspect publisher, file, and permissions
If you obtain a direct download, inspect the actual destination and the publisher information surfaced by macOS. If the system raises a warning, determine why instead of disabling protection to force the application open. Only grant permissions that match a feature you intend to use. For a store route, inspect the current listing and developer identity there; do not assume a button on this independent site proves the listing’s authenticity.
File size, version, hash, and signature must correspond to the exact Mac file offered. A checksum copied from a Windows package or a previous release provides false reassurance. The site’s download metadata should remain unset until its owner can validate the actual file.
Sign in and distinguish synced from device-only chats
Use the app’s current sign-in flow, keeping login codes and two-step verification passwords private. After signing in, open a familiar cloud conversation and verify that recent messages appear. Telegram’s FAQ says Secret Chats are device-specific, so a secret conversation started on an iPhone may not appear in a new Mac session. That is not evidence that a Mac installation failed.
If all cloud chats are missing, check that the Mac and phone are signed in to the same account. Review active sessions from a trusted device after adding the Mac. The multi-device guide gives a stepwise way to compare account and chat types.
Set notifications and file locations deliberately
Test a private chat and a muted group separately. A conversation-level mute, Telegram setting, macOS notification permission, and Focus setting can each affect alerts. Change one factor at a time and send a test message before reinstalling the application. For busy groups and channels, the community guide explains why one community may be intentionally quiet while another alerts.
Download a small trusted document and locate its actual saved path in Finder. A file shown inside a Telegram chat is not necessarily a copy saved in a folder you back up. The Desktop files guide separates cache, saved files, and transfers that appear incomplete.
When browser access is the better fit
If you are using a borrowed Mac or cannot install software, compare Telegram Web. The browser route changes how you manage downloads, browser permissions, and sign-out; it is not a Mac installer. On a shared computer, end the session when finished and review active sessions from a trusted device. The current app interface can change, so confirm menu names and support details against Telegram’s official documentation before following an old screenshot.
