Telegram Desktop Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, or Web?

Choose the correct Telegram computer client or browser route for your device and task.

Telegram Desktop is not one installer that works unchanged on every computer. The official desktop page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux choices, including a Windows portable build and Linux distribution options. This guide helps identify the right platform before a file is selected; it does not assert that this site currently hosts any verified installer.

Read the platform choices before the download label

The Telegram Desktop page lists Windows x64, a portable option, macOS, Linux x64, Flatpak, and Snap, as well as additional Windows options. That list can change as the product changes. Start with the operating system and architecture reported by your computer, then use the matching platform section. Do not run a Windows executable on macOS or try to use a Linux package manager file as an Android APK.

The site’s Windows download URL is configured, but its delivered file still requires a source and integrity check. Version, signature/publisher where applicable, file size, and checksum belong to that exact file, not to a generic “Telegram Desktop” label. Mac and Linux routes need their own separately configured and checked targets.

Windows: installed or portable

On Windows, decide whether you want the normal installer or intentionally manage the portable build. The two choices differ in how you handle application files, shortcuts, updates, and local data. Neither choice changes the need to protect a signed-in account. The Windows versus portable guide walks through that decision and what to check on a shared computer.

Confirm the architecture before choosing an x64 build. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, follow its software policy rather than using the portable option as a way around restrictions. If Windows displays an unexpected publisher warning or unrelated bundled software, stop and inspect the file instead of disabling security controls.

macOS: a separate application environment

Telegram’s desktop page lists a macOS option and a Mac App Store path. Follow the current instructions appropriate for that platform and check any macOS permissions you actually need after installation. A Windows troubleshooting step about the taskbar or EXE signature is not a macOS installation guide. For tasks involving login, files, and updating on a Mac, continue to the macOS page.

If you also use an iPhone, remember that the phone and Mac are separate sessions. Cloud chats can be available across signed-in devices, but Telegram’s FAQ says Secret Chats are device-specific; installing a Mac app does not move a Secret Chat from the phone.

Linux: choose a packaging route deliberately

Telegram’s desktop page includes a Linux x64 download and Flatpak/Snap choices. Those are not interchangeable instructions: each installation or update path has its own environment. Check what your distribution supports, how updates are delivered, and whether the application can access the folders where you expect to save files. The Linux page covers desktop environment and file tasks in more detail.

A failed launch after installation should be diagnosed with the actual package route and system message. Do not download random “fix” scripts or a Windows EXE to solve a Linux dependency or permission issue.

Browser access is a different option

If you only need a temporary session and do not want to install a desktop application, read the Telegram Web guide. WebA and WebK are listed separately in Telegram’s applications directory. A browser tab has different local storage and sign-out considerations from an installed desktop app; do not call it a Linux, Mac, or Windows installer.

After choosing a suitable platform, use the Desktop first-session guide to verify a familiar cloud chat and inspect the computer’s account session. A configured Windows URL is not evidence that the file has been verified, and it should never be treated as a Mac or Linux download.
